I made my first post here about the Yough river and I really failed to mention any detail about fishing there, so I thought I would offer this little bit of info for anyone passing through that might be interested in fishing the Yough.
When my brothers and dad showed me how to start fishing it was all live bait, normally fished drop-shot style with a Y-stick stuck in the bank. We would use night crawlers and salmon eggs on a small-ish hook tied a foot or 2 above the weight and then placed the rod in the Y-stick, reeling line in until it was taut so we could detect bites. I was a kid and it's tough to remember exact details back that far, but I want to say the most common weight was around 1/2 oz.. We were mostly targeting trout but you can catch just about anything on night crawlers, and we did.
But as I got a little older I wanted to try artificial lures and there's one that has always stood out:
The Mepps Aglia
, and specifically the one I have linked to here with a gold or silver blade. This is one of the best all-around baits I've ever used and it will catch just about anything. Experienced fishermen reading this probably aren't surprised, but if you're new to fishing and you just want to get out and have fun and maybe catch a few give this lure a try. Just cast it out and reel it in. They happen to be on sale at the time I'm posting this so it's a great time to pick one up.
I caught many fish on the Yough with this lure and I've used it plenty of times after moving south (where this blog pic was taken) and it catches fish just about everywhere I've gone, so try one out if you never have. They're straight-up fish catchers. Good luck and tight lines!
