Beaver Lake in Arkansas was one of the lakes in regular rotation on the FLW tour and being a deep, clear lake, it presented some unique challenges. The tour was sponsored by Walmart, and not coincidentally Beaver Lake is right by Walmart HQ. I'm sure there was more to the event for the corporate folks and the important people but I was just a regular schlub looking forward to fishing another new lake.

On day 1 I get paired with Jim Moynagh, a heavy-metal loving, ass-hauling boat driver from up north. When it's time to go to the next spot, Jim doesn't mess around. We hit a ton of spots that looked like places that would hold fish but it just wasn't working. I didn't weigh in a fish that day and Jim didn't have a great day either, only weighing in 2 small fish. It was a plain ol' tough day and I don't know Beaver Lake well enough to even guess what else we should have been doing. Casting net maybe?

On day 2 I get paired with one of the nicest guys I would meet all season: eventual Bassmaster Classic winner Jeff Gustafson. When you hear people talk about how nice Jeff is, they're not lying. He's a super genuine dude. And he's a stellar fisherman, obviously. He knew the small details of what it took to get the right bites (and explained some things to me) and cashed himself a nice check in this tournament.

The only fish I weighed in over 2 days was a 15 oz dink. I caught a couple of others that were short and the only thing I got a bite on during the entire tournament was a Luck E Strike RC Stick (blueback). It was a bad tournament for me as far as the fishing goes but I met some great folks and I definitely learned a few things. After this poor showing I was excited to fish the next tournament that was only a couple hours away from home, Pickwick Lake.
