If you've read my blogs from the first 2 tournaments of the 2014 FLW season you know that I had some challenges, but I cashed a check and learned a few things so it wasn't an entire loss. Enter match #3.. Sam Rayburn Reservoir in East Texas. While I was excited to be fishing in Texas for the first time, at this point in the season I would just be happy with a 'normal' tournament with no surprises, and that's exactly what I got.

On day one I was paired with Alex, a touring pro and popular guide on Lake Guntersville just up the road from me. Alex had to drive his boat like a grandma that day (his words) but I appreciated that because we did have some good sized rollers to drive through, which is nothing unusual on Sam Rayburn from what I hear. It's a wide lake and the wind can get it stirred up quickly.

Alex and I hopped around and hit all those typical spring spots you want to be in, and of course we weren't the only ones. At one point we were in a fairly small cove and there were 6 boats in there, all rotating around the cove in unison like a skating rink. It's one thing to be able to go out on a lake and catch fish, but when you're doing it against a couple hundred other anglers that have all been practicing on that lake for a few days, things get a little tougher. It didn't bother Alex and he filled out a limit for 14lbs and some change and eventually cashed a nice check, and I only put 3 in the boat for a little over 4 lbs. Not a great day but I was glad it was just a normal fishing day.

Day 2 was fairly normal as well. My partner Colby and I hit the same type of spawning areas and had decent days but nothing great. He put 4 fish in the boat and I had 2, and we both fell short of making a check and fishing on day 3. I threw lots of things and wasn't getting bit all day long until I tied on a Zoom lizard in watermelon red and I caught 2 nice ones pretty quick. In hindsight I wish I would have used that bait more during the tourney but I just chalked it up as another learning experience.

Overall I enjoyed my time and the people in Texas and I'd like to visit again sometime.
