My pal Chris and I decided to try our luck at some rainbow trout fishing below Smith Lake dam on the Sipsey river. We don't have a lot of trout in Alabama so it's a novelty to go catch a few. Chris had fly fishing gear and I had a spinning setup because that's what I always used to catch trout up north when I was younger. We tried a few things but only found one that would work: that gooey Berkley trout bait stuff you ball up and stick on the hook. I used that with a small split-shot and just let it bounce down through the rocks with the current.

I ended up catching 7 that day but none of them were big. In fact, they were more like fish stick size. But I did see a pic of a 4lb+ Rainbow that a guy said he caught there a few months before that so that was encouraging. He was one of those random people you meet when you're out fishing sometimes, and he's the one I have to thank for catching any fish that day. He said I needed smaller hooks and gave me a few and that's when I started catching them. I thought I was using pretty small hooks, but you could have caught minnows on the hooks he gave me they were so small. We had a good time but didn't catch any monsters. It's a cool place to fish and it would be worth checking out a little more in depth sometime.
