In 2007 I decided to join the BFL just to see what the bigger fishing tournaments were all about. I had fished a few very small ones with friends so I was curious and I signed up as a co-angler in the BFL Bama Division to check it all out.

Tourney #1 was on Lake Martin in south Alabama on a cold, and I mean COLD February day. A strong front had just pushed through and the winds were howling. It was around the freezing mark with winds up to 20mph.. ALL...DAY... Yeah, it was one of those kind of days. The boater I was fishing with thought it would be a good idea to fish the windy banks that day, too.

We occasionally had to dip our rods into the water because ice was forming on the tip. If it was an ice tournament I think I would have done pretty well, but unfortunately it was a fish tournament and I brought one measly little dink to the scale for a little over a pound. My partner had a few fish like that and neither of us were close to cashing a check that day, so that's one you just put behind you and move on to the next.
